Chic and brilliance Very frequently, the patients are afraid of setting the implants because they fear that the implants will never get rooted. It may happen, but this is rather an exception than a rule. According to the World Health Organization, 96 - 98% of patients have successfully gone through the process of implantation. However, it should not be done to everyone. It is prohibited, for instance, to do it to people suffering diabetes or having thyroid pathology. Risk factors are also metabolic disturbances, heavy forms of cardiovascular diseases and connective tissue diseases. Therefore, the dentist in charge must make all necessary examinations before the treatment: blood test, as well as to study the bone tissue. After the health correction, however, the implantation is possible. Age herein is not a counter-indication: the implants can be set both to children and elder people. One has to remember though that new teeth are sometimes better than the old ones.Chic and brilliance “My removable dentures disturb me”, wrote George Washington in his letter to his dentist. Decades have passed since then, but the standard dentures, same as before, get much trouble and inconveniences to their owners. Classic removable and fixed dentures are known perhaps to everyone. They have both advantages and disadvantages. But now we shall not concentrate on a well-known dentistry “classics”. One has to emphasize that contemporary dentistry resolves teeth problems in a more elegant way. I am talking of a prosthetic substitute – the implant. It has many advantages. For example, it can be set right after removal of the tooth, not being waiting for healing of the gingiva. While implantation, an artificial root is “implanted” into the jaw, to which either crowns or removable, or non-removable dentures are fixed. Therefore, the implant becomes absolutely immovable and fully substitutes all the functions of the own tooth, which is very convenient and important for normal chewing of food. Besides, it prevents destruction of the bone tissue. And there is no need to round off the neighboring healthy teeth, in order to set the implant. Expensive but advantageous but advantageously At first sight, the implant seems to be more expensive than the usual denture. Average prices in Kiev clinics fluctuate from UAH 3,000 to UAH 10,000. In fact, you actually save on the implantation. Assume you decided to set a usual denture. First of all, you need to round off two neighboring healthy teeth. Yet, you have got to remove “nerves” and prepare your jaw for the bridgework. This will cost you about a thousand of hryvnas, and yet UAH 1,500 – UAH 2,000 more for the denture itself. As you can see, the price difference is insignificant; specifically, if one takes into account that 95% of the contemporary implants serve for at least 10 years. However, if you take care of them right, you cane use the artificial teeth throughout life, whereas the usual dentures should be replaced with new ones each 5 to 6 years. And one has to take into account that two teeth carry the load of all three teeth while usual bridgework dentures. Doctors advise making implantation not only for the reason of restoring the functions of the lost teeth but also to feel comfortable, attractive and healthy. Knowing what it feels like its hide I heard of a new prosthetics method long ago from abroad friends of mine, but I still was afraid of making the implantation. What if something goes wrong? At the same time, I totally objected killing two healthy teeth in order to make bridgework. After long hesitations, I finally dared to set the implant. I passed through all necessary examinations in my first visit to the dentist. There had been no counter-indications. Therefore, they did a computer tomography and X-ray photograph right upon the checkup, in order to study anatomic structure of my jaw, as well as my teeth functionality. The results were not on my side: because of very thin bone tissue, they had to order the implant from abroad. If I had referred for this immediately upon tooth removal, there wouldn’t have been a need to wait. When the artificial tooth was made, they put a titanium screw into my jaw, which had been rooting for two months (and here I was luckier: the rooting period usually lasts twice to 3 times longer on the upper jaw). They set a temporary denture into my jaw for this period. After the artificial root got successfully implanted, they put a so-called “cap” onto the screw, which is the very denture. This procedure took 15 minutes. Now I only remember of having the implant at dentist’s examination. Not everlasting but will serve for a long time Today, there are many arguments around about longevity of the implants. There are patients who use implant dentures for 25 years. The implants can deteriorate or break the same way as the natural teeth. But they can be easily restored. An important factor affecting life span of the new teeth is observing hygiene. After the implantation, the artificial teeth need the same care and hygiene as the natural teeth. Anyway, the doctors recommend visiting a dentist twice a year in order to prevent any infections.
